Our Mission

Why we do what we do

Lingofi exists because learning a language is one of the most direct ways to understand another person’s world. The Institute for Global Engagement is where that belief turns into practice: research, teaching, and open resources built with real rigor.

The Problem

Language doesn’t live in a textbook

A vocabulary list can teach you words. It can’t teach you why a phrase lands differently in a formal meeting than it does among friends, or why a news headline means something different to a reader who grew up with the history behind it. That context, cultural, historical, current, is what makes a language usable, not just memorized. It’s also usually the hardest part to find, especially for languages that don’t have a large industry built around teaching them.

That’s why IGE pairs every regional Center with research: not to study politics for its own sake, but to give learners and educators the background that makes a language make sense.

What We Make

Material that does justice to a culture

The dictionaries, briefs, courses, and podcasts IGE produces aren’t just study aids. They’re a genuine way in, for a learner, a researcher, an educator, or a native speaker looking at their own language documented with real care. That’s the standard every Center works to: material built well enough that it holds up as a real resource, not a simplified version of one, for outsiders and insiders alike.

Our People

Built by people who know the material

IGE’s fellows hold graduate degrees in the languages and regions they cover, and many have worked directly in the field as linguists, researchers, and educators. That expertise is what separates a real explainer from a generic one. When a fellow writes about a region, they’re drawing on years of direct study, not a quick search.

Our Approach

Research that becomes something you can use

Research on its own doesn’t teach anyone a language. So IGE turns that work into things people can actually use: dictionaries, phrasebooks, community classes, workshops, and open datasets, several of which feed directly back into the Lingofi platform. The goal isn’t to publish and move on. It’s to keep building the material that makes learning a language more possible.

Our Standard

Analysis, not advocacy

IGE’s research looks closely at the regions and institutions behind the languages it covers, including politics, media, and public communication. That work stays analytical: it describes and explains rather than argues a side. We want IGE’s research to be useful to a learner, an educator, or a journalist in any of the countries it covers, not just people who already agree with a particular point of view.

Our Roots

Part of Lingofi, not just funded by it

IGE exists because Lingofi’s own product runs on the same premise: a language is worth taking seriously, not just memorizing. IGE is where that premise gets room to go deeper, through fellows, research, and community work a language-learning app couldn’t do on its own.

That backing turns into real funding and opportunity for the communities IGE works with, including, but not limited to, endangered and minority language work, content built for native speakers, and resource development for learners. What IGE builds makes Lingofi better, and Lingofi is what makes this work possible in the first place.
